Aloe Vera is a succulent of the lily family, with fleshy leaves that provide a gel widely used as a treatment for skin problems, and for soothing and healing. Known as long ago as 1500 BC by the Egyptian healers and it is now grown commercially in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Japan,and the USA.

It is not certain how Aloe Vera works, but among the active ingredients, rich in antiinflammatory substances, the gel contains a gummy material called Acemannan that acts as an emollient, a compound that reduces pain and swelling, and components that sooth itching. Aloe Vera also dilates the tiny blood vessels, known as Capillaries, thereby letting more blood reach an injury site, and speeding up the healing process. Some studies have shown that Aloe Vera destroys, or inhibits, the spread of many bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

It may be taken internally to combat inflammatory digestive disorders, including ulcers and indigestion, stomach lesions, Peptic ulcers, ulcerative Colitis, and Candidiasis. Studies are exploring its use as an antiviral, and immune system booster, to help AIDS sufferers, Leukaemia, and other types of cancer, and also as a treatment for Diabetes.
